THE CHAMELEON SESSIONS

Pete Briley’s “The Chameleon Sessions” is a monthly residency that happens on the last Thursday of the Month at Subculture in the City Centre. It began in September, continued in October and the next “session” is on Thursday November 27th, there will be no Chameleon Session in December, but it will return on January 29th.

As the name would suggest, each month Pete will be playing with a different group of musicians backing him up - in the first month he played with a full band, in October with four singers, and November will see him perform with a string ensemble.

CREDIT TO COOL ACOUSTICS

Hats off to Cool Acoustics who have raised a combined total of over £400 for local charities recently. Organising fund-raising events is an unenviable task at the best of times, to do it during a “credit crunch” is a truly creditable achievement.

TWO FOR THE FUTURE

Listening to an album from a new band or attending a gig by a new band can be very much like looking through a kaleidoscope, unsure of what to expect. Two bands that LMP has come in to contact with recently left a lasting impression and if you wish to see/hear two exciting new bands please check out the following.

URCHIN CHILD
Seeing Urchin Child “live” is an experience that stays in the mind well after the guitars are packed away and the lights go out on another gig. In lead-singer Joe they have the best frontman with attitude and stage presence seen in may years, coupled with a band who rock venues to their foundations, they give performance after performance which belie their youth and experience. I am confident that this will be one of the most talked about bands for many years to come.

www.myspace.com/urchinchild

MAN MADE NOISE
You realise the album from Man Made Noise is going to be different as soon as you hear the intro, what follows takes you on a magical musical mystery tour. Sounding psychedelic at times through to piano backed strong ballads and rock anthem-esque power tracks, former Ernest frontman Terence Dunne carries them all off with quality and aplomb, definitely an album to take the listeners to surprising and interesting places and we await the next development from this very talented musical adventure.

MARCH OF DIMES - ALL INTENTS AND PURPOSES

With harmonies to die for, poignant lyrics, strong vocals and tight playing this has to be one of the most rounded and consistant albums of 2008. The five highly talented musicians based in Leeds, have produced an album which is uplifting, thoughtful and catchy in equal measures, but never predictable or bland. The band members have an array of instruments which adds to the expectations of the listener, as the band surprises the listener as synthesisers make way for acoustic, which makes way for the piano, which makes way for lead guitar all superbly complemented by wonderful vocal performances. With the success of Yorkshire’s favourite Americana band The Durbervilles own Radio Show and the Hee Haw Sessions at Santiago in Leeds, the future looks bright for the Americana/Country scene in West Yorkshire, and while there are bands of this calibre then hopefully recognition on all fronts will be achieved and will be well deserved.

HOUSE CONCERTS YORK

House Concerts have been very popular and successful in America for a number of years, the concept is now becoming increasingly popular in the UK. One of, if not the most renowned and most respected is the House Concerts York. Set-up by Tony and his partner Nicki, the independent non-profit venture goes from strength to strength with their informal and relaxed gigs. With just 40 places available the atmosphere is obviously intimate but respectful to the artists, who arrive from around the world to play at this very special venue. The latest House concert to take place was on the 11th Oct when ODI and Eoghan Coglan travelled to the picturesque village 20 minutes from the centre of York. As the audience of various age groups took to their seats, surrounded by a collection of photographs of past performers looking down, from the white glossed walls, there was a feeling of expectation and excitement, what followed was possibly unique and very endearing. As the artists played, a pin dropped on the wooden floor would have sent vibrations around the room as everyone sat in perfect silence listening to every picked chord and every vocal range covered. Eoghan Coglan with his tales of song-writing and musical skills was the perfect support to ODI, with Claire Odlum and Dave Redfern demonstrating once again why they are a duo gaining big followings in both the UK and Ireland. The first visit to a York House Concert can feel a little daunting, as you ring the doorbell feeling like a double-glazing salesman, however, you leave 3 hours later with the wonderful inner glow of meeting new friends and wishing everyday life could give you the same feeling as this very special experience had.

CLAIRE ASHTON & HARGREAVES

To be the lead singer of any band, takes a monumental amount of effort, determination and talent, being a female lead singer, the scrutiny and demands are raised even higher. Claire Ashton has all the qualities required and more besides as she leads with passion, vigour and class. With an easygoing persona which never reduces her professionalism, she helps four-piece Harrogate band Hargreaves produce superior performances in both “Live” and “Studio” work. Covering Blues, Soul and Country themes, including many of their own songs and also some classic cover versions, the band consists of Claire, James Healey on Guitar, drummer Steve Shelley and Bassist and backing vocalist Chris Webb. Their highly acclaimed and recently released EP is a wonderful introduction to what the band is all about, with the bluesy title track, “(Bad,) Bad Girl”, an uplifting and toe-tapping “Kiss Me Better” and covers of Stevie Ray Vaughan’ “Life By The Drop” and finally Mary Chapin Carpenter’s “Passionate Kisses” which this reviewer felt was the equal at the very least to the original recording. The EP is very good, catch them live and you will be very, very impressed, if America is looking for a favourite UK acoustic/blues/country band, then look no further than Claire Ashton and Hargreaves.

A LITTLE PIECE OF ENGLAND - PATSY MATHESON

Mention the name Patsy Matheson and a warm musical glow envelops the discerning music lover. As part of the driving force of the all-female band, and Glastonbury Festival starring, Waking the Witch, Patsy received critical acclaim throughout the music-industry, however it is as a solo performer that Patsy’s song-writing talent and pure voice comes to the fore

The release of her latest album “A Little Piece of England” will enhance her reputation even further, as she takes the listener through the full range of human strengths, weaknesses, feelings and emotions.

Patsy has a vocal range that can melt the heart through “Sunday Morning Song” and “Little Piece of England”, convey the fragility of hope and dashed ambitions in “Treading Water Town” and “This New Song”, inspire social, political and economic questioning on “Play the Game” and “Precious Little Soldier”, be stinging on “Lamb to Slaughter”, narrate through the story of a travelling female musician on “Ulverston Gypsy” and finally romantic via “Row Down to Wroxham”. Whatever your mood, there will be a song on this album which will ignite a nerve or emotion as only a very special talent can achieve.

This is not only a musically glorious album; it is also a statement that Patsy Matheson, the solo performer, is back and better than ever!

HEE-HAW HAPPINESS

A first visit to a Hee-Haw session, soon established why there is such a positive vibe regarding Hee-Haw Promotions. Staged in the upstairs bar of Santiago in the Grand Arcade, Leeds, it soon became apparent that this was to be a very special night run by dedicated lovers of “Live” music. With the chandelier reflecting the glow of the stage illuminating candles down on to the packed venue, this was a stress-busting and relaxing inspired oasis. The venue and followers were treated to a night of music of the highest order with Gary Stewart getting the night off to a memorable start with his own inimitable style, Gary was followed on stage by Odi, fresh for a successful tour of Ireland and proving again what a talented duo Claire Odlum and Dave Redfearn have become. The headline act was the highly rated Mark Geary from Ireland, who wowed the audience with his banter and musical expertise, and showed why he is compared to Damien Rice and that ilk in his native Ireland. A first visit, but definitely not the last, as the glow of the atmosphere and musical brilliance will remain in the memory for the foreseeable future, top marks to all concerned.

SUNDAY SPECIAL AT THE DUCK & DRAKE

The Duck and Drake was rocked to its foundations on Sunday as Bloozpromoz brought together both an up and coming young band and a “Blues” devotee’s favourite.

The Decades

The young band got the day off to a rip-roaring start as they stunned the packed venue with a performance which belied their youth and experience. The quality of the original material used, provided a glimpse of a band destined to go places within the next few years.

www.myspace.com/thedecadesband

Bluesville

Pocket dynamo vocalist Sharon Colgan, supported by musicians with many gig-bags of experience, in the form of Laurie Hopkins on guitar, drummer Rhys Phillips and bassist Brian Longhurst, gave the D & D a gig of the highest quality. The North Yorkshire based Blues/Rock band continue to enhance their reputation as one of the most professional bands around. Many attempts are made to “cover” the classic track “Summertime” but very few, if any, could match the rendition performed by Sharon and the band. Stormy Monday may have rattled the D & D windows, but this was a sensational Sunday!

www.myspace.com/bluesville

The Decades are supporting Urchin Child on Thursday 11th Sept at The Fenton, Woodhouse Lane, Leeds. With free entry and a drinks promotion of £1-50 a pint, the music starts at 9-00. This is a relatively new music venue and will hopefully be supported as the need for suitable and supported venues continues. Further details can be obtained on 0113 245 3908 or via the website below:

HELEN LAWSON - CROSSING THE BRIDGE

Most EPs are a “taster” of a new artist/band, a chance for the artist to “test” the market before the possible launch of a “full” album. Very few EPs have had the effect as the four-track EP “Crossing The Bridge” from Helen Lawson, has had on this reviewer. Each track is beautifully crafted and compliments a voice which, at times is hypnotic and on occasions both haunting and angelic!

In May 2007 this website predicted a big future for Beth Rowley after she supported Duke Special in Leeds, Beth has gone on to great things and being played many times of national radio, including BBC Radio 2, do not be surprised if Helen Lawson and her alternative/folk/pop style achieves the same levels of exposure over the next few years.

This is as good an EP as you will ever hear and will surely propel the London based singer-songwriter to the musical heights her talents deserve.

NEW ROSCOE - THE NEW NASHVILLE

JUSTIN TOWNES EARLE

Justin Townes Earle took the New Roscoe audience through an American musical journey, which will be remembered long after the son of legendary singer-songwriter Steve Earle has packed his suitcases and landed back in the good old U S of A. With a confidence and stage presence reminiscent of Dwight Yoakam, Justin performed tales of 1930’s America through to his own modern-day classics of relationships, good and bad with a humour which put the packed venue at ease. The smoothness of his act as he crafted elements of the Blues, American Country and even Rock-style tunes, made this an evening to sit back and enjoy a craftsman at the peak of his profession.

THE LOST BROTHERS

Reading their myspace site reveals that The Lost Brothers are a very different and unique duo. With a deeper-voiced Everly Brothers sound to them, the duo are becoming favourite visitors to West Yorkshire. Bosh and Bark’s harmonic singing and guitar playing were the perfect support act for Justin Townes Earle.

MAGHRIBIBEAT - AL SHARITTE LA'AWAL

If you are not familier with North African music then you are in for a very pleasant surprise with the first CD from Maghribibeat. The Hebden Bridge based band have a following which is increasing rapidly and the release of this seven-track album will swell the numbers even further. The highly rhythmic and trance-like sound, typical of North Africa is reproduced with stunning effect. The percussionist in everyone will be brought to the fore, as its impossible not to join in to the rhythms as it becomes almost hypnotic. The band are becoming favourite performers at festivals around Yorkshire and beyond, and have already been featured on Tom Robinson’s BBC Radio 6 programme.

BLIND RIVER SCARE - KILLING TIME

Blind River Scare are now back in Wales after recently completing a first tour of Yorkshire. Their obvious love of Folk Rock/Americana and Alternative-Country shines through their five track CD “Killing Time.” The track “Out of my Hands” will surely become an audience participation favourite, especially as their fan-base increases. Over the years West Yorkshire has seen “The Durburvilles” become firm favourites on the “Live” music-scene with their “feel-good” sound and performances, Blind River Scare have the same quality. The combination of talented vocalists Tim Manning and Lisa Matthews, backed up by Jem Ponsford on drums, bassist Tim Brooke and fiddle player Debbie Hawkins produces a rounded and warm feel to each track. This is a CD which is ideal after a hard day at work, when the need to be lifted and transported to a “better place” is at it premium and the requirement of a feel-good quick-fix is at its height.
